What does it mean to be a whiskey drinker? Certainly I am not talking about drunkenness, though I sometimes understand the few who come to that conclusion. Rather I am talking about a consumer of sorts, an outlook on life if you will. What does it mean to live a life modeled on the disciplines it takes to enjoy a truly wonderfully made product like whiskey? Firstly one needs to be open to new experiences, an adventurer. To actually understand whiskey one must allow themselves to be surprised and taken back. To understand one product, you have to understand other products. Secondly one must have respect for differences. Scotch may not be your favorite spirit, but to truly understand bourbon, or any other spirit, one must have a respect for the other options out there. Lastly you have to love the journey and you have to love people. We push forward, not simply for the end goal, nor simply for ourselves, but because, whiskey ultimately brings together humans on the same plane. The desire of this human element, “the connection,” is at the heart of a whiskey drinker. This is where we begin.
