I recently watched a 3 part interview with the Master Distiller of Four Roses and thought it was really interesting, and consequently wanted to buy a bottle of their Yellow Label, but I have not been able to find it anywhere. Is Four Roses a particularly rare bourbon? Any thoughts on how to procure it?
An interview with Jim Rutledge? He is a great guy - so passionate about bourbon, and really cares for the Four Roses product. Though you picked a tough one for sure. If the interview hinted about the history of Four Roses at all you will know that it has been a bumpy road for the distillery the past 60 years (hopeful none-the-less). And the Yellow Label, even with it being the most basic of their 3 selections, is hardest to find. It has only just been released back in the US after many years. So if you want to find it in a store I would suggest flying to Europe or Japan - it’ll be easier! I would have three (realistic) suggestions: 1. look online somewhere, if you can find a merchant in the US that has a bottle. 2. Talk to your local merchant. Get to know them. And ask them if they know anything about its availability. Some know more about when the next release of whatever product you looking for will be out. And, if they know a customer really wants something, generally they will try and get it. 3. Look for the single barrel or small batch bottlings. They have been floating around in the US market longer and hence are easier, though still rare, to find.
Somewhat of a treasure hunt if your not lucky to happen by it I’m afraid. Hope that helps.
